Hilltoppers pick up sloppy victory over Panhandle State, 13-4

Box Score GOODWELL, Okla. – After starting the season 2-4, the St. Edward's baseball team has won 9 of its last 10 games to improve to 11-5. On Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked OPSU Baseball Field, the Hilltoppers worked through nine errors to defeat Panhandle State, 13-4 and move into second place in the Heartland Conference standings just two games back of St. Mary's in the loss column. St. Edward's (11-5, 8-4 HC) got the scoring started in the first inning when Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) led off the game with a home run. The Hilltoppers could have added more but they ended up leaving the bases loaded. That would be a common theme of the ball game as St. Edward's would leave them loaded four times and strand 15 runners for the contest. The Hilltoppers would plate another run in the second and two more in the third to take a 4-1 lead after three innings. St. Edward's would increase its lead to 6-2 after scoring a run in both the fifth and sixth innings. However, the game would get tight, when Panhandle State would score two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Hilltoppers would commit three errors during the inning to help the Aggies. The Hilltoppers answered by scoring seven runs over the final three innings to pull away from the Aggies. Tyler Harris (Houston, Texas/Cisco JC) picked up the victory allowing four unearned runs on four hits, while walking five and striking out 10 batters in 7.0 innings of work. Johnson led the Hilltopper offense, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) drove in four runs while going 2-for-5. The two teams will look to wrap up their weekend series on Sunday at Noon. However, the doubleheader is in jeopardy as the field has taken a lot of water. They will try and play Monday if necessary.
