Hilltoppers split doubleheader with Panhandle State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GOODWELL, Okla. – The St. Edward's baseball team split a doubleheader with Panhandle State Monday afternoon at the OPSU Baseball Field. The Hilltoppers left nine men on base during a 5-2 game one loss, but rebounded to shut down the Aggies in game two, 10-1. Game 1 Hilltopper starting pitcher Matt Davis (Taft, Calif./Taft JC) held Panhandle State (2-16, 2-13 HC) without a hit through the first three innings. St. Edward's (12-6, 9-5 HC) could not capitalize on Davis' start as they stranded five runners on base during that time. The Hilltoppers finally broke through in the fourth inning when Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) led off with a double. He came in to score on an RBI-single by Nate Bobrowski (Jerome, Idaho/San Mateo JC) to put St. Edward's ahead, 1-0. The Aggies answered in the bottom of the fourth inning when Alan Droke and Colton McKithan picked up RBIs. Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto JC) would tie the score in the fifth inning for the Hilltoppers with an RBI-single. However, Dillon Doucette led off the bottom of the fifth for Panhandle State with a home run. The Aggies would score two unearned runs in the sixth inning to make the score, 5-2. St. Edward's, again, had trouble driving in runners as they left three stranded in the final two innings. Game 2 In the rubber match, neither team was able to score through the first four innings. Jeff Rohrbach (Houston, Texas/Bellaire HS) was masterful on the mound for St. Edward's as he only allowed one baserunner through the first four frames. In the fifth inning, the Hilltoppers finally got on the board. Burford led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UTSA) also reached on a two-out walk. Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC) would drive them both in with a double. Shank led off the sixth inning with a walk and came in to score on a two-out single by Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) to increase the lead to 3-0. After Panhandle State got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, the Hilltoppers responded with two runs in the seventh inning. In the ninth inning, St. Edward's put the game out of reach as they strung together four hits to push across five runs. Stephen Johnson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) came on to pitch the ninth inning and struck out the side. Rohrbach (2-1) picked up the victory, allowing just one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out two batters in 8.0 innings of work. Johnson and Rogers led the way offensively for the Hilltoppers as both players went 3-for-7 at the plate during the double dip.
