Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team split the doubleheader against longtime rival St. Mary's in their “Battle of the Saints” matchup. The Rattlers won the first game 4-0, and the Hilltoppers took the second game 7-0.
Game 1
In game one, St. Mary's (15-3, 13-1 HC) struck first in the second inning with bases loaded as Ivan Sigala was walked by Tyler Harris (Houston, Texas/Cisco JC), allowing Michael Cokinos to score. St. Mary's would follow with two runs in the third inning as Cokinos hit a single to left field collecting two RBI brining in two Rattlers to score. Making the score 3-0 in favor of St. Mary's.
In the sixth inning, the Rattlers would score another run when Josh McElroy hit a sacrificed fly to right field bringing in Sigala. The first game would end with Rattlers up 4-0. T. Harris pitched for six out of the seven innings only allowing seven hits and three errors.
Game 2
St. Edward's (8-5, 6-4 HC) would take the second game scoring six runs in the fourth inning. Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) would start off the Hilltoppers hitting with a nice single to right field, followed by Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) who hit a single right field. Both players would then advance off of a throwing error by the Rattlers right fielder.
With men on second and third, Daniel Homann (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) would hit a single to center field collecting two RBI. Making the score 2-0 in favor of the Hilltoppers. Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC) would keep up the Hilltoppers momentum by hitting a double to left field. Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC) would then follow with a single right up the middle giving time for both Homann and K. Harris to score. Rogers advanced to second on the throw to home.
The Hilltoppers were not done yet as Collin Elmore got on base with a single to right field, followed by Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) who hit a sacrificed bunt to bring Rogers home, extending the lead 5-0. Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto College) quickly followed with a double to left center field collecting an RBI as Elmore scored the sixth run of the inning.
St. Edward's led 6-0 at the end of the fourth. In the fifth inning, Koenig would strike gold, hitting a homerun over the right filed fence making the Hilltopper lead 7-0. The game would end quickly as each team retired batters only allowing one hit a piece. St. Edward's would take the second game 7-0.
Leader for St. Mary's was Sigala who collected three hits throughout the day. Carl O'Neal was the Rattlers top pitcher of the day, pitching all seven innings in the first only allowing three hits. Leaders for St. Edward's were Homann and Rogers who each collected two RBI, along with Koenig and Elmore who each had three hits apiece through the day. Matt Davis (Taft, Calif./Taft JC) pitched five innings allowing only four hits with zero errors.
St. Edward's will be back in action tomorrow as they battle St. Mary's for the third game of the series that will kick off at 1:00p.m.
