Box Score 2 WICHITA, Kan. – The St. Edward's baseball team collected two wins Friday afternoon as they defeated Newman in the first game, 7-3, and also the second, 14-12.
Game 1
Newman (17-12, 12-11 HC) took to the board first scoring two runs in the first inning but St. Edward's (20-8, 16-6 HC) would not let the Jets pull away as they scored two runs in the third inning tying up the game at 2-2.
The Hilltoppers would take the lead in the fourth inning scoring four runs. AJ Hermanson (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown HS) singled to left field and was out trying to get to second giving Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UT-San Antonio) time to run home and score. With Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC) on base from a fielding error, Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) hit a double to center field brining in Rogers. T. Johnson was brought home by a single from Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC) to left field. Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto JC) would then bring K. Harris home off of a double to left center field.
With the score now 6-2 in favor of the Hilltoppers the Jets tried to get back in the game and scored a run in the fourth, but St. Edward's would stop them here, preventing the Jets from getting any hits for the remainder of game one. The Hilltoppers would collect one more run in the sixth inning when K. Harris doubled to left field bringing in Hermanson who was waiting on second.
The Hilltoppers would take the first game 7-3.
Game 2
In game two, St. Edward's would strike first as Shank doubled to left field bringing in T. Johnson to score. Newman would follow with three runs in the first inning. The first was off a double hit by Corey Cowan, the second off a double from Ruben Marrero, and the third from a single by David Longmore making the score 3-1 in favor of the Jets.
The Hilltoppers went to work in the third inning collecting five runs. Shank would collect another RBI as he hit a single through the right side brining T. Johnson home. Marshall Burford would collect two RBI bringing home Shank and Colin Elmore (Dallas, Texas/Richland CC) off of a single through the left side. With the bases loaded, Rogers would be walked giving the Hilltoppers another run as Burford scored. T. Johnson would then be hit by the pitch giving St. Edward's their fifth run of the inning.
With the score 6-3 in favor of St. Edward's, the Jets were determined to keep the Hilltoppers close and secured two runs in the third inning closing the gap making the score, 6-5.
The Hilltoppers were on a roll and would follow with four runs in the fourth inning. As LaLonde reached on a fielder's choice, Burford advanced to second and Shank advanced to third but Shank would then score on a throwing error by the catcher. With bases loaded, Hermanson singled to third base brining in Burford. Rogers hit a sacrifice fly to left field giving LaLonde plenty of time to score. T. Johnson then reached on a fielding error by the Jets right fielder, giving time for Nate Bobrowski (Jerome, Idaho/San Mateo JC) to score, extending the Hilltoppers lead to 10-5.
Down by five, the Jets would answer back with three runs, the first off a single by Tyler Hancock, the second off a SAC fly by Marrero bringing in Jerrod Flax, and the third as Longmore hit a SAC fly brining in Hancock. Making the score 10-8 in favor of the Hilltoppers.
St. Edward's would secure two more runs in the sixth after LaLonde doubled down the left field line and was brought home as Bobrowski doubled to right center. Bobrowski would score off of a SAC bunt to the pitcher by Hermanson.
The HIlltoppers still weren't done and would secure another run in the seventh off of a SAC fly from Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) brining in Elmore and one more in the eighth as Hermanson doubled, bringing in LaLonde.
With the score now 14-8, the Jets made one more effort in the eighth inning and secured four more runs but would lose to the Hilltoppers 14-12.
Leaders for Newman were Shanan Engroff who had two hits and three RBI, and Marreno who had two hits and two RBI.
Leaders for St. Edward's included Shank who had a total of four hits and four RBI for the day, Hermanson who had three hits and three RBI, and K. Harris who collected two hits and two RBI.
Tyler Harris (Houston, Texas/Cisco JC) took the win in the first game, pitching all seven innings allowing only four hits with one earned run and five strikeouts. Brad Nasis (Bulverde, Texas/Smithson Valley HS) took the win in the second game with three earned runs and four strikeouts. Stephen Johnson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) took the save having no hits, no errors and four strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
The two teams will finish off the three-game series with a single game on Saturday at noon.
