St. Edward’s takes the series, winning all three games over Newman

Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – The St. Edward's baseball team won the third game of the series, 4-2, over Newman this afternoon taking all three games of the series. After having two high scoring games yesterday, today's game came out on the low end. Neither team would score in the first four innings.

It was not until the top of the fifth when St. Edward's (21-8, 17-6 HC) would get on the board. With Colin Elmore (Dallas, Texas/Richland CC) on third Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) would lay down a squeeze bunt to the pitcher allowing Elmore time to score.

The Hilltoppers would score again in the sixth inning as Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto JC) hit a homerun over the right field fence taking the score to 2-0 in favor of the Hilltoppers. Newman (17-13, 12-11 HC) would score in the bottom of the sixth as David Longmore hit a double bringing in Ruben Marrero who had been on second. St. Edward's would collect two more runs in the eighth inning.

With Wes Koenig (Austin, TX/Hill JC) on base from a single, Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) followed with a single through the left side. Max Minor (Austin,Texas/Blinn JC) would come in to pinch run for Burford. Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UT-San Antonio) would bring both of his teammates home off of a single to left center field collecting two RBI.

Newman would score one more run in the eighth inning after Jerrod Flax doubled and was brought home off of a double by Tyler Hancock, but the game would end 4-2 in favor of the Hilltoppers. Leaders for Newman were Hancock and Longmore, who each had one hit and one RBI. Leaders for St. Edward's included LaLonde who had one hit and two RBI and Shank who had the one home run of the game.

Jeff Rohrbach (Houston, Texas/Bellaire HS) took the win pitching seven innings allowing six hits and one run with three strikeouts. Stephen Johnson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) took the save, pitching two innings allowing two hits while striking out four batters.

St. Edward's will be back in action Tuesday as they host Texas A&M-Kingsville for a single game that will kick off at 2:00 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
