Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team swept a doubleheader over UT-Permian Basin this afternoon in the first two games of the series due to some big hits from Adam Shank, Taylor Johnson and Marshall Burford. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 3-1, and took game two, 15-2. Game 1 St. Edward's (25-9, 19-6 HC) struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning.
Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) got on off of a single and advanced on a sacrificed bunt by Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC). Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto JC) came up to bat and would bring Johnson home as he hit a homerun to right field. The Hilltoppers would score again in the fifth as T. Johnson singled through the right side collecting an RBI as he brought Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC) home.
UT-Permian Basin (11-25, 7-19 HC) would only secure one run before the end of the first game in the sixth inning as Arturo Carrera collected a home run. Game one would end 3-1 in favor of the Hilltoppers.
Tyler Harris (Houston, Texas/Cisco JC) would take the win for the Hilltoppers, pitching all seven innings allowing only one run on six hits, while striking out eight batters. He improves to a team-best 8-1 on the mound. Game 2 In game two, the Falcons would try to set the pace and would secure a run in the first inning but their lead would not last.
The Hilltoppers followed with two runs in the second as Burford pounded out a home run bringing in Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC). The Falcons would follow by securing another run in the third inning tying up the game, 2-2. However this would be the last run scored by the Falcons for the day. In the third inning St. Edward's collected a total of eight runs. Harris doubled to left field brining in T. Johnson.
With a man on base, Shank sent a bomb flying high above the right field fence, collecting his second home run of the day. With three men on Nate Bobrowski (Jerome, Idaho/San Mateo JC) would send a single to center field bringing in two Hilltoppers. Rogers would then sacrifice a fly ball out to center field, giving Colin Elmore (Dallas, Texas/Richland College) time to tag up and score on the throw. K. Harris would then single to center field and both Bobrowski and T. Johnson would score on an error by the Falcons centerfielder.
The inning would end, Hilltoppers up 10-2. In the fourth, Koening would hit a double to center field. Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UT-San Antonio) would be walked and Bobrowski would bring both men in as he singled to right field. With the score 12-2 the Hilltoppers still weren't finished and would secure three more runs.
The first was from T. Johnson as he hit a homerun. K. Harris then reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and would be brought home as Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) connected hitting a homerun to left center field. The game would end at the seventh as the Hilltoppers lead 15-2. Matt Davis (Tafl Calif./Taft JC) would take the win in game two pitching seven innings allowing only two runs on six hits and having six strikeouts.
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday as they finish the series against UT-Permian Basin at 1:00 p.m. The two teams will play a doubleheader, with only the first game to count as a conference contest.
