Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team came out on top after getting off to a late start to take the win over UT-Permian Basin this afternoon. In the last game of the three-game series, the Hilltoppers came from behind to take the win, 9-8. St. Edward's followed with a second win of the day against the Falcons in a non-conference game, 5-3.
Game 1
UT-Permian Basin (11-27, 7-21 HC) got off to an early lead scoring a run in both the first and second innings, with the first being a homerun from Arturo Carrera. St. Edward's (27-9, 21-6 HC) would collect a run in the third as Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) hit a single to center field bringing in Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC), who got on off of a double, putting the Hilltoppers down by one. UT-Permian Basin then took off in the fourth and fifth scoring three runs in each taking the score to 8-1 in favor of the Falcons.
With the need for something big, Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) stepped up in the sixth inning pounding out a homerun, giving the Hilltoppers the momentum they needed. In the seventh the Hilltoppers would make up for lost time, securing three runs to make the score 8-5. Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto JC) would double to left center and would be brought in off of a double from Wes Koenig.
Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UT-San Antonio) would bring in Koenig as he singled to right center. Burford would then score on a wild pitch. Not willing to take the loss, the Hilltoppers would come from behind and take the win in the bottom of the eighth by scoring four runs. With the bases loaded, Burford would reach on a fielder's choice, sacrificing Koenig at second but giving K. Harris time to score. LaLonde would get his first homerun of the season and would bring Shank and Burford home with him.
The Hilltoppers took the game 9-8. Brad Nasis (Bulverde, Texas/Smithson Valley HS) would take the win after pitching four innings allowing three hits, three runs but having five strikeouts.
Game 2
Even though the second game was a non-conference game, neither team wanted to take the loss. The Falcons would score first in the second inning as Beau Anderson singled to center field brining in Rivera who was waiting on third.
St. Edward's would take the lead in the third scoring three runs as Mark Thomas (Moline, Ill./Northlake CC) singled to left center. T. Johnson got on after being walked, and both men advanced on a passed ball. K. Harris would bring in both of his teammates after hitting a double down the left field line. Koenig would then bring in K. Harris as he hit a double down the right field line.
The Hilltoppers would take their lead to 4-1 as they scored again in the fifth inning as K. Harris grounded out but gave Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC) time to score as he had been waiting at third. The Falcons would try to make a move in the sixth but would only secure two runs as the Hilltoppers were determined to take the win. Burford would score the last run for the game in the sixth as he homered to left field.
The game would end 5-3. Max McDonald (Pflugerville, Texas/Hendrickson HS) would take the win after pitching a little over four innings allowing four hits, three runs, while having six strikeouts. Leaders for the Falcons included Carrera who had one homerun with four hits and one RBI and Anderson who had two hits and two RBI for the day.
Leaders for the Hilltoppers included Burford, LaLonde and T. Johnson who each collected a homerun for the day. LaLonde had a total of two hits and four RBI and T. Johnson had a total of four hits and one RBI for the day.
St. Edward's will be back in action Tuesday as they host a single game against Northwood at 2:00 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
