St. Edward’s splits first two games against rival St. Mary’s

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team split the first two games of this weekend's three-game series against #2 St. Mary's. The Hilltoppers took the first game 6-3 in 13 innings, and then fell to the Rattlers in the second game, 3-0. Game 1 St. Edward's (29-10, 22-6 HC) would take to the board first securing two runs in the third inning.

With Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC) on first after being hit by the pitch, senior Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto JC) stepped up to plate and reached on a fielding error by the Rattlers centerfielder advancing all the way to third while K. Harris scored. Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) would bring Shank home as he flied out to the centerfielder, collecting an RBI for himself.

St. Mary's (37-8, 27-5 HC) would follow with two runs of its own in the third tying up the game 2-2, as both Brandon Bates and Esteban Raygoza brought in fellow Rattlers off of a single from Bates and a double by Raygoza. Both teams would score again in the seventh taking the score to, 3-3. With the game tied they would go into extra innings.

It would not be until the 13th inning that the Hilltoppers would finally score, collecting three runs. AJ Hermanson (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown HS) singled to center field. Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) was walked. With two men on Joe Pirozzolo (The Woodlands, Texas/College Park HS) reached on a throwing error by the pitcher and advanced to second on the throw collecting two RBI as both Hermanson and T. Johnson scored. Pirozzolo would then come home as Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UT-San Antonio) singled to right field. The game would end 6-3, as the Rattlers went out in order in the bottom of the 13th.

Brad Nasis (Bulverde, Texas/Smithson Valley HS) would take the win for the Hilltoppers in game one after pitching five strong relief innings allowing two hits, no runs, with five strikeouts. Game 2 After all the work the Hilltoppers put into game one, they could not find the rhythm in game two. St. Mary's would score in the first, second and sixth innings. Off of a single from Bates a double from Mario Maldonado and a run scored off of a wild pitch by Billy Richard.

Game two would end in the Rattlers favor, 3-0 as St. Edward's only collected three hits. St. Edward's will be back in action Sunday as they battle St. Mary's to see who will take the series at 1:00 p.m. at SAISD Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
