St. Edward’s outplays Panhandle State, taking all three games of the series; breaks records in the process

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 AUSTIN, Texas – The 24th-ranked St. Edward's baseball team took all three games of the series against Panhandle State this weekend. The Hilltoppers took game one, 2-0, game two, 4-2, and game three, 7-3. To make things that much sweeter Stephen Johnson manages to break the school record on Friday by collecting his 15th save of the season, and would break his own record again on Saturday taking a 16th save. Game 1 St. Edward's (33-11, 24-8 HC) broke out early, scoring one run in the first with a double from Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC), bringing in Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC) who was waiting on second. The remainder of the game would be a pitching battle as the Hilltoppers only allowed three hits and Panhandle State (4-41, 3-30 HC) would only allow one hit until the sixth inning when Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto JC) hit one out of the park, collecting his sixth homerun of the season. Game one would end 2-0 in favor of the Hilltoppers. Matt Davis (Taft, Calif./Taft JC) would take the win, pitching five innings and striking out six. Johnson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) would lend a hand pitching an inning to collect his 14th save. Game 2 In game two, St. Edward's would get into scoring position first as K. Harris singled to left and advanced to second on a fielding error by the Aggies leftfielder. Shank would then hit a single through the right side and would advance on the late throw home, as K. Harris scored. Panhandle State would secure a run in the fourth as Alan Droke singled down the right field line bringing in an Aggie. It would not be until the sixth when St. Edward's would score again as Burford sent one flying over the left field fence collecting a homerun, giving the Hilltoppers a 3-1 lead. The Aggies would collect a run in the seventh as Dominic DeJoseph tripled down the right field line driving in a run. The Hilltoppers would secure the win in the eighth as Burford flied out to the center field giving Rylan Patel (Colleyville, Texas/Colleyville Heritage HS) time to come home as he pinch ran for Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC). The Hilltoppers would finish off the day taking the second game 4-2. Brad Nasis (Bulverde, Texas/Smithson Valley HS) would take the win, pitching eight innings allowing only two runs but having 11 strikeouts on the day. S. Johnson would collect his 15th save after pitching an inning for the Hilltoppers breaking the school single season record. David Wagner had the record with 14, that he set in 2007. Game 3 St. Edward's came out strong again as they began the third game of the series Saturday afternoon. In the first inning K. Harris would get on after being hit by the pitch. Koenig wouldn't leave him stranded as he doubled to right field giving the Hilltoppers an early 1-0 lead. In the third inning the Hilltoppers would collect two runs as both K. Harris and Koenig singled through the right side. Both men would score as Burford doubled to center field. On a roll, St. Edward's would score another two runs as Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) collected his seventh homerun of the season sending one soaring over the right center field fence collecting two RBI as he drove in Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC). Down 5-0, Panhandle State began finding a rhythm in the sixth as they scored two runs after Adam “Freezy” Smalls flied out to center field brining in an Aggie and Dillon Doucette drove in a run with a double, taking the score to 5-2. St. Edward's would not give up its lead, and would secure a run in both the seventh and eighth innings as Shank scored on a throwing error by the shortstop off of a fielder's choice hit by Patel. The run in the eighth would be scored as K. Harris singled to through the left side as Will McCaleb (Houston, Texas/Blinn JC) scored. Panhandle State would score one run in the ninth but the Hilltoppers would take game three, 7-3. Jeff Rohrbach (Houston, Texas/Bellaire HS) took the win pitching seven innings, allowing only two runs and having seven strikeouts. S. Johnson would break his own record, made the day before, collecting his 16th save of the season. St. Edward's will be back in action this weekend as they take on TAMU-International. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m. and Saturday's single game will kick off at 1:00 p.m. Saturday will be “Senior Day” on the Hilltop.
