Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team made some critical plays in today's doubleheader against TAMU-International in order to collect two wins for the day. The Hilltoppers took the first game 4-1 and the second 14-8.
Game 1
TAMU-International (23-26, 13-22 HC) took to the board first securing a run as Castillo grounded out to the second base allowing a fellow Dustdevil to bring in their only run of the game.
St. Edward's (35-11, 26-8 HC) would follow with two runs in the fourth as Wes Koenig (Austin, Texas/Hill JC) got on off of a double to right field and was brought in off of a homerun from Marshall Burford (Austin, Texas/Temple JC) as he sent one flying over the left centerfield fence. With the score 2-1, the Hilltoppers would extend their lead in the fifth as Taylor Johnson (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs HS) would be walked.
Using his speed, T. Johnson stole second and would be brought home off of a throwing error from the Dustdevils pitcher as Kyle Harris (Layton, Utah/Clarendon JC) reached on a sacrificed bunt, advancing to second. The Hilltoppers would secure their fourth run in the sixth, taking the first game of the series 4-1. Brad Nasis (Bulverde, Texas/Smithson Valley HS) would collect his ninth win of the season after pitching seven innings, allowing four hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
Game 2
In game two, St. Edward would take to the board in the first inning by securing a run as Adam Shank (Sugar Land, Texas/San Jacinto JC) singled to left center bringing in K. Harris who was waiting on second. Looking for the win, TAMU-International would take a 5-1 lead over the Hilltoppers in the third inning. Jaron Shimmel started the Dustdevils off with a big triple to right center field and would be brought in by Jeremy Olivio.
Olivio would advance as Jeff Anderson hit a double. Will Wurth would bring in both men off of a double. Mick Daniels would drive in Wurth off of a single. The last run for would come in as Matt Arruda singled to center field driving in a fellow Dustdevil. With the pressure on, the Hilltoppers had to come up with something big. In the third the Hilltoppers would secure one run as Shank got on off of a single and would advance as Koenig was walked and would finally be driven home as Ransom LaLonde (Tulsa, Okla./UT-San Antonio) singled up the middle.
With the score 5-2 in favor of the Dustdevils, St. Edward's still had work to do and in the fourth inning the Hilltoppers would strike gold securing 10 runs off of six hits to take the lead. With Beau Rogers (Carbonado, Wash./Tacoma CC) on third with two outs the Hilltoppers got some critical hits. K. Harris drove in Rogers off of a single. Shank followed with a double bringing in K. Harris. Koenig reached on an error by the first baseman, giving Shank time to score. Then with bases loaded Nate Bobrowski (Jerome, Idaho/San Mateo JC) hit a doubled off the right field fence, driving in three runs. Making their way to the top of the lineup, Colin Elmore (Dallas, Texas/Colleyville Heritage HS) was walked and both he and Bobrowski were brought home by Rogers who doubled to right field. Rogers advance to third on an error by the Dustdevils pitcher. T. Johnson was walked and then stole second.
As K. Harris was walked the bases would be loaded as Shank stepped up to the plate. Shank singled up the middle driving in the last two runs of the inning. Leading 10-5, the Hiltoppers had to stay on their toes as TAMU-International would try to come back, securing a run in the fifth, and two more in the sixth, closing the gap 10-8. But with the end of the game in sight, the Hilltoppers would hold off the Dustdevils and would secure two more runs in the eighth. Elmore would get on after being hit by the pitch and would advance on a sacrificed bunt by Rogers.
Mark Thomas (Moline, Ill./Northlake CC) would also get hit by the pitch. Shank would drive in another run as he singled to center field sending Elmore home. Koenig then singled to center field bringing in Thomas to score the last run for the Hilltoppers. The game would end 14-8 in favor of St. Edward's.
Paul Smith (Austin, Texas/McNeil HS) would take his second win of the season in game two after pitching three innings allowing only three hits and three runs. Casey Russell (Colleyville, Texas/Oklahoma) would earn his first save of the season as he pitched three innings allowing three hits and no runs with two strikeouts. Leaders for the Dustdevils included Wurth who had four hits and three RBI and Arruda who had three hits and two RBI for the day.
Leaders for St. Edward's were Adam Shank who had six hits and five RBI in game two alone giving him seven hits and five RBI for the day. Burford collected the only homerun of the day giving him two hits and two RBI. Bobrowski had two hits and three RBI for the day. Rogers also ended the day on a high note with three hits and two RBI. St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday as they take on TAMU-International for the last game of the three game series that will kick off at 1:00 p.m. It will be “Senior Day” on the Hilltop.
