Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team came up short, losing 3-1 against Texas A&M-International Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
TAMU-International (24-26, 14-22 HC) scored in the first inning as Gosselin singled to center field driving in a fellow Dustdevil. They would score again in the third inning extending the lead to 2-0 as Gosselin would drive in another runner off of a single. St. Edward's (35-11, 26-8 HC) would follow with a big hit from Colin Elmore (Dallas, Texas/Richland CC) as he hit a homerun over the left field fence, putting the Hilltoppers on the board 1-2.
The St. Edward's pitching staff would do a great job trying to freeze out the Dustdevils allowing only one hit until the seventh inning when Salas would double to left center and would advance to third off of a single from Smedley. Salas would then score off of a wild pitch. The Hilltoppers would fight until the end preventing more runs from the Dustdevils, but were unable to secure any more runs. The game would end 3-1, in favor of TAMU-International.
Both pitching staffs would work hard as Jerry Hawkins took the win for the Dustdevils. Jeff Rohrbach (Houston, Texas/Bellaire HS) may have taken the loss, but he pitched a great six innings allowing only three runs. Stephen Johnson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder HS) pitched two plus innings and allowed only two hits and tallying six strikeouts.
St. Edward's will enter next weekend's Heartland Conference Tournament as the number two seed. They will take on third-seeded Newman Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Sullivan Field. St. Mary's is the host of the tournament, but all games will be played on the campus of Incarnate Word.
