Hilltoppers erase early deficit to move to 2-0

2012 St. Edward's Women's Soccer Academy
Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. – The St. Edward's women's soccer team fell behind early but rallied with two goals to defeat Adams State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the ASC Soccer Field.

Adams State (1-1) didn't waste any time welcoming the St. Edward's (2-0) to Colorado. The Grizzlies had two shots in the first three minutes of the contest. The second one came on a free kick deep in the Hilltopper zone with 3:15 on the clock. Kaylee Smith found the back of the net to put Adams State ahead early.

St. Edward's fought back, putting constant pressure on the Grizzlies. Over the next 20 minutes, the Hilltoppers tallied two shots and posted three corner kicks. Finally in the 25th minute, MEGAN ANDERSON knotted the score as she headed the ball past the Grizzly keeper on a pass from RACHEL MURRAY. That is the way the first half would end.

In the second half, freshman LAUREN HELLER went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and won, scoring her first collegiate goal. The tally was the eventual game-winner as the Hilltoppers started the season off with a 2-0 record for the sixth-straight season.

“We are a young team who has grown on this long road trip,” head coach Nick Cowell said. “Two tough matches, played at altitude, have shown that we have a strong team chemistry and the battling qualities needed to succeed. We can play better, but it is a solid start to the season.”

St. Edward's outshot Adams State, 11-6, but the Grizzly did hold a 5-4 advantage on shots on goal. Anderson led all players with four shots, while junior goalkeeper DANIELLE LICARIONE made four saves for her second victory in net.

St. Edward's will now come home to start a five-match home stand. It will begin with two games next weekend. The Hilltoppers will take on Metro State on Friday at 2 p.m., and Regis on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. All home matches will take place at the Lewis-Chen Family Field. Live Video and Stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
