Hilltoppers earn second split in as many days at Hilltopper Classic

How it happened
-The Hilltoppers opened the game up strong with three hits and four runs during the first inning of play. FAITH ROBERTS' squeeze bunt brought in MARISSA THOME for the first run. A KENDALL LUCAS single brought home ALLY VALDEZ and LAUREN BRODE. Lucas scored the final run of the inning off a LAURA ALVARADO single.
-SARAH DEBROW kept the Javelina offense at bay only giving up two hits in her first three innings of work.
-St. Edward's went back to work adding two runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Thome scored her second run of the game off a Brode squeeze bunt.
-TAMU-Kingsville registered one run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-1. The Hilltoppers responded with two runs of their own in the sixth inning. St. Edward's entered the seventh inning with an 8-1 lead and would eventually take the game 8-2.
 
Beyond the Box Score
-With the two runs MARISSA THOME registered, she is now in a tie with teammate ALLY VALDEZ for most runs on the season. They both have scored nine runs.
-SARAH DEBROW tacked on six more strikeouts to improve her mark to 54 on the season.

How it happened
-It was a defensive battle early through the first three innings. Neither team registered a hit throughout the stretch.
-Texas Woman's got on the board first in the fifth inning. The Pioneers mustered three hits and scored three runs to take the 3-0 lead halfway through the game.
-The Hilltoppers gave up two additional runs late that would put them down 6-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning.
-MEMRIE WATERS singled down the left field line with two outs left. SAMANTHA GILMORE was next up to bat and hit a ground ball to the second baseman that eventually tagged Waters for the final out of the contest.
 
Beyond the Box Score
-KATELYN KLUG went the distance in her second consecutive start for the Hilltoppers.  She threw a total of 112 pitches in the game.
-MEMRIE WATERS registered her first hit as a Hilltopper in the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
Up Next
The Hilltoppers will be back on March 2nd as they travel to take on Eastern New Mexico in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled at 1 p.m. at the Zia Softball Field on the campus of Eastern New Mexico. Live stats will be available through the Zia athletic website.
