How It Happened
-Newman got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, getting an RBI-single from Tanner Vinson for a 1-0 lead.
-After going hitless in the first two innings, St. Edward's responded with seven hits leading to six runs in the top of the third inning.
CJ MANNING and
NATE BOBROWSKI both had two RBI during the inning.
RYAN DOLEZAL and
CUTTER RUNTE also drove in a run to give the Hilltoppers a 6-1 lead.
-After the Jets answered with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 6-5, St. Edward's rallied for seven runs over the next three innings for a 13-5 lead. In the fourth inning,
KEVIN MAYO had a RBI and
CJ MANNING produced two more RBI. In the fifth inning,
RANSOM LALONDE and
NATE BOBROWSKI each had an RBI. Mayo tallied the final RBI in the rally during the sixth inning.
-After Newman chipped away at the lead with two runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh, the Hilltoppers put the game away with seven runs on eight hits in the eighth inning for a 20-8 lead. The game would end due to the 10-run rule after the Jets came up empty in the bottom of the eighth.
-Mayo led the Hilltoppers at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI.
DYLAN WATTS also had four hits, while also scoring three runs. LaLonde, Manning and Bobrowski each had three hits, with Bobrowski and Manning each driving in four runs.
Beyond the Box Score
-The 24 hits were a season high for the Hilltoppers. The previous high for this year was 16 against TAMU-International (3/16/13). In fact, the 24 hits ties for fifth-most in school history and are the most since March 22, 2011 when the Hilltoppers had 25 hits against Abilene Christian.
-St. Edward's last scored 20 runs in 2011, which also came against Newman in Wichita, Kan.
-With Manning's four RBI on Saturday that pushes his season total to 29. That leads the Heartland Conference.
-After this week's games,
TAYLOR JOHNSON is now second in the conference in batting average with a .397 average. Manning is fourth with a .374 average.
