Hilltoppers pull the upset in NCAA Regional opener

Lauren Brode
Box Score The Basics
-Score: St. Edward's 5, West Texas A&M 2
-Records: St. Edward's 31-21: West Texas A&M 43-12
-Location: Canyon, Texas (Schaeffer Field)

How It Happened
-Both teams threatened during the first two innings. St. Edward's would get the leadoff hitter on but would be left stranded both times. West Texas A&M stranded a runner in the first inning and in the second would have runners at second and third with one out. Hilltopper starting pitcher SARAH DEBROW buckled down and got Mercedes Garcia to pop up and she struck out Megan Slattery to end the inning.
-In the third inning, the Hilltoppers finally broke through. With two outs, MARISSA THOME would beat out a ground ball to third base for an infield single. KENDALL LUCAS followed with a hit-by-pitch. LAUREN BRODE then tallied the first RBI of the game with a single to left field to score Thome. Then something strange happened. With runners on second and third, West Texas A&M starter Haley Newcomb sent a pitch to the backstop that caromed around to the Lady Buff dugout. Both runners would advance two bases, which scored Lucas. Catcher Mallory Wyatt's throw to home plate was errant and went down the first base line allowing Brode to score and make it 3-0.
-The Lady Buffs would get runners on in each of the next four innings, but Debrow was there to thwart their efforts, stranding five runners over that time.
-In the seventh inning, St. Edward's would get two insurance runs. KACI OLSON led off with a single to left field. Olson would move to second on a groundout and Lucas followed with a walk. ALLY VALDEZ ripped a single to centerfield that got past the Lady Buff centerfielder. Olson and Lucas would both score on the play.
-Those insurance runs became pretty important when the Lady Buffs pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run by Alyssa Lemos.

Beyond the Box Score
-Victories by the visiting teams at Schaeffer Park are very hard to come by. The win by the Hilltoppers dropped the Lady Buff home record to 24-3.
-After opening the season with a 3-5 record, Debrow has tallied an 18-5 record over her last 23 starts.
-The two-run homer by Lemos in the seventh inning broke a streak of 11-straight innings that Debrow had kept the Lady Buffs scoreless. Debrow threw a perfect game against the Lady Buffs in an 8-0 run-rule victory over West Texas A&M earlier in the season.
