Box Score DENTON, Texas – St. Edward's dropped the opening game of a three-game series against Texas Woman's, 4-1, Friday evening at Pioneer Field. The two teams are pitted against one another in the NCAA Super Regionals with a spot in the NCAA DII Softball World Series on the line.
St. Edward's (33-22) produced a two-out rally in the first inning by drawing two walks. A groundout would end the rally and keep the Hilltoppers off the scoreboard.
Both teams would go scoreless through the first two innings before Texas Woman's (50-12) threatened in the bottom of the third. The Hilltoppers would commit two errors and the Pioneers would push two unearned runs across the plate.
After the Hilltoppers went in order in the top of the fourth inning, the Pioneers would score two more runs. One would come on a triple by Haley Colwell and another on a sacrifice fly by Bailey Vrazel for a 4-0 Texas Woman's lead.
St. Edward's would get a run back in the sixth inning when
MARISSA THOME reached on a leadoff error by Vrazel.
KENDALL LUCAS followed with a single down the right field line that advanced Thome to third base.
ALLY VALDEZ followed with a sacrifice fly to score Thome and get the Hilltoppers on the board. However, that is all St. Edward's would come up with in the inning.
The Hilltoppers would get a one-out walk by Briana Bozon in the seventh inning, but she would be left stranded as the Hilltoppers dropped the opening game.
The two teams will be back in action Saturday when they face off for game two of the three-game series. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. at Pioneer Field. If the Hilltoppers win the first game of the day, the two teams would face off in a winner-take-all game at 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening.
