Hilltopper Baseball set for first-ever NCAA DII World Series

CARY, N.C. – After rallying for wins in two elimination games on Sunday to win the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament, the St. Edward's baseball team will head to its first-ever NCAA DII World Series. The series is set to begin this Saturday and run through Saturday, June 1st at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
 
St. Edward's (42-16) will play the fourth and final game of the first round on Sunday versus Grand Canyon University at 5:00 p.m. EST. The Hilltoppers and Lopes (39-17) have never met on the diamond.
 
Both Tampa (43-11) and Coker College (38-14) are in the same half of the eight-team bracket with St. Edward's. The other half of the bracket includes: Franklin Pierce (36-17), Shippensburg (32-21), Grand Valley State (35-17) and Minnesota St.-Mankato (39-8).
 
St. Edward's has ridden one of the best pitching staffs in the nation all season, sporting a 2.82 ERA, which is good for eighth in the country. The also sport a team batting average of .297 and have outscored its opponents, 346-206.
 
Hilltopper Head Coach Rob Penders is making his fifth trip to a College World Series, as he was part of coaching staffs at the University of Texas (DI) that went in 2000, and San Jacinto JC (NJCAA) that went in 2002, 2003, 2004.
