SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Sophomore-transfer Brook Hughes swept through Flight 1 Singles to lead the St. Edward's Women's Tennis team at the 2013 Trinity Quad Tournament this past weekend. The two-day event was hosted by Trinity.
Hughes, a sophomore-transfer from Oregon, started the tournament off by taking down 2013 All-American, Mariana Rong of St. Mary's, 6-3, 6-4. Rong was unbeaten last year with a 21-0 record and was named Heartland Conference Player of the Year. Hughes followed that up with a split-set super tiebreaker win over Incarnate Word's Ivana Katavic, 6-1, 2-6, 10-5, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Hughes bested Incarnate Word's Sarah Savedra, 6-3, 6-1.
Also in Flight 1, SASHA KHADZHYAN finished fourth after falling to Katavic. She opened the bracket with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Laredo CC's Milena Vitez.
In Flight 2 Singles action, RAFAELA HAEGELE dropped her first match only to rally with wins over Gabrielle Roe of Trinity and Rebecca Delgado of Laredo CC to win the consolation title.
Flight 3 Singles action saw FLORENCE BOINON equal Haegele's task. After falling in her opening match, Boinon took down Trinity's Kathleen Lundquist and Laredo CC's Kim Rodriguez to win the consolation championship. FRANCESCA CHAHER won her first match in Flight 3, downing Trinity's Lavinia Bendandi, 6-4, 6-2. She would eventually end up fourth in the bracket.
BREANNE HESSELTINE opened the Flight 4 Singles bracket with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Trinity's Laura Roe. Hesseltine would finish fourth in the bracket. SUMMER BIGGS also competed in this flight. She compiled two tough losses that both went to a super tiebreaker.
In Flight 5 Singles, the Hilltoppers' newest member TATIANA MARCHIZANO dropped her first match of the day. In her last match in the flight, she was narrowly defeated by Michelle Gun-Munro of Trinity, 2-6, 6-2, 10-0.
In doubles action, Hughes and Khadzhyan teamed up to win their first match over Vitez and Delgado of Laredo CC, 8-3. In the semifinals, the duo dropped an 8-5 decision to Katavic and Andi Botha of Incarnate Word, 8-5. The team would rebound to take home third place honors by downing Lundquist and Caroline White of Trinity, 8-3. Haegele and Boinon teamed up in Flight 1 as well. The duo narrowly lost to Delgado and Lopez from St. Mary's, 9-8. They shook off the loss and went on to defeat a team from Incarnate Word in the consolation bracket.
Flight 2 Doubles saw Chaher and Biggs team up. After dropping their first match, the two rallied to blitz the team of Rodriguez and Garza from Laredo CC, 8-0.
Hesseltine and Marchizano teamed up in Flight 3 Doubles but lost both of their matches.
St. Edward's will be back in action Friday when they travel to participate in the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander Open. Tournament action will take place Friday through Sunday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
