LUBBOCK, Texas—The St. Edward's volleyball team fell to Lubbock Christian, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the Rip Griffin Center. Although it swept St. Edward's (25-23, 25-23, 25-15), it was a hard fought victory for Lubbock Christian.
The first and second sets came down to the wire as the two teams battled it out. In the opening set, St. Edward's (10-2, 6-2 HC) captured an early lead, but Lubbock Christian (10-1, 7-1 HC) quickly rallied back. The two teams were tied 14 times throughout the set. Even at 23-23, a kill from Chaparral Amy Edwards and a Hilltopper error gave Lubbock Christian the first-set victory.
The second set made for equally intense competition. It was the Chaps who jumped ahead first this time, outscoring the Hilltoppers 20-11. St. Edward's refused to give up, however. A 7-0 run brought the visitors back into the running.
LOREN KELLY recorded an ace, forcing Lubbock Christian to call a timeout at 23-21. After resuming play, the Chaps eventually won the set on a kill from Abby White.
The Chapparals ran away with the third set, holding the Hilltoppers to just nine kills and a .089 hitting percentage.
AMY JONES registered 10 kills while Kelly tallied 20 assists.
KELLY JIMENEZ recorded a match-high 30 digs.
TABITHA ELDER led the way defensively, recording five blocks and three digs.
