AUSTIN, Texas—St. Edward's volleyball swept UT-Permian Basin Saturday afternoon in the RCC to wrap up Heartland Conference play. The win brings St. Edward's overall record to 17-7 and its Heartland Conference record to 11-5.
The Hilltoppers took care of business on Saturday with an outstanding defensive performance. St. Edward's held the Falcons to a -.019 hitting percentage for the match and registered 12 team blocks.
In the first set, the Hilltoppers dominated with a strong offense. The visitors had no answer for a .394 hitting percentage and 15 kills from St. Edward's. It went on to win 25-15.
UT-Permian Basin could not find rhythm in the second set, hitting a -.118 percentage. The visitors managed to stay within reach of the Hilltoppers, but a 7-0 run proved to be too much to rally back from. A strong defense, including eight blocks, gave the home team a 25-15 second-set victory.
Trying to avoid the sweep, the Falcons gave the Hilltoppers a difficult time in the third set. Down four early on, UT-Permian Basin fought to come within two points bringing the score to 17-15. St. Edward's managed to hold on however, defeating the Falcons 25-20.
KATIE MARTIN and
AMY JONES led St. Edward's to its win, each registering nine kills and hitting percentages of .308 and .538, respectively.
TABITHA ELDER tallied seven blocks while
KELLY JIMENEZ put up 17 digs.
LOREN KELLY had a match-high 20 assists.
