13th-ranked Hilltoppers down Houston-Victoria, 4-3

Ransom LaLonde
Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – RANSOM LALONDE's home run in the first inning got the St. Edward's offense started and the #13 Hilltoppers hung on for a 4-3 win over Houston-Victoria Thursday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

With two outs in the first inning, LaLonde ripped a ball over the fence in left field to give St. Edward's (12-6) a quick 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Hilltoppers got a leadoff single from JOHN ALEXANDER. After UH-Victoria (9-13) misplayed a bunt by GABLE WHITACRE to put runners at second and third, two wild pitches later it was 3-0, as Alexander and Whitacre scored.

The Jaguars would get two runs back in the third inning when they started the inning with three consecutive hits to score two runs.

Hilltopper starting pitcher DALTON BROWN (2-0) would settle down after that and eventually pick up the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out five in 6.0 innings of work.

The Hilltoppers would add an insurance run in the seventh inning when Alexander singled home DYLAN WATTS to make it 4-2.

UH-Victoria scored a run in the ninth inning to make it interesting, but Hilltopper closer DAN BECKS left two runners stranded for his third save of the year.

St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday when they host Fisher College. The doubleheader will begin at noon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. Live video and stats will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
