#7 Hilltoppers close in on Heartland Conference Championship with doubleheader sweep of Rogers State

Wes Koenig
Box Score AUSTIN, TEXAS – WES KOENIG continued his onslaught of Heartland Conference pitching Friday afternoon as the senior designated hitter went a combined 5-for-6 with seven RBI to lead St. Edward's to a doubleheader sweep of Heartland Conference newcomer Rogers State. The Hilltoppers reduced their magic number to clinch at least a share of the conference title to one game.

St. Edward's (33-12, 20-6 HC) got the scoring started in game one of the second inning. CHRIS KILLEEN would plate the first run of the inning on a RBI-single. Using back-to-back triples by MILES WRIGHT and AJ HERMANSON, St. Edward's scored two more runs to make it 3-0.

The Hilltoppers used the long ball in the third inning to increase their lead. With one out, WES KOENIG launched a ball off of the net in right field, and RANSOM LALONDE followed with a home run of his own to the gap in left field.

Rogers State (17-26, 10-19 HC) got a run back in the top of the fourth inning, but St. Edward's did not take its foot off of the gas. The Hilltoppers got and RBI-double by KEVIN MAYO and an RBI-single by Koenig for the final margin.

BRANNON EASTERLING (9-4) picked up the victory, allowing one run on seven hits, while walking four and striking out six batters in his complete game victory.

In game two, St. Edward's struck early, scoring four runs in the first two innings. In the fifth inning, the Hilltoppers busted the game wide open. MILES WRIGHT plated two runs with an RBI-single to centerfield and Hermanson's second triple of the doubleheader scored two more runs. Koenig put the icing on the cake as he cleared the bases with a double down the right field line to make it 11-0. The game would end because of the mercy rule.

COLLIN SHERROD (9-0) picked up his ninth consecutive decision victory and 12th-straight dating back to last season. The lefty allowed no runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out six batters in 6.0 innings of work.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series with a single game on Saturday. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field. Live video will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
