SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The St. Edward's men's tennis team hoisted the Heartland Conference Championship trophy for the sixth-consecutive season with a 5-3 victory over St. Mary's in the championship match at the Rohrbach Tennis Center on the St. Mary's campus.
 
St. Edward's got doubles victories at the number one and two positions. PEDRO BRONSTRUP and FELIX BAKE dominated the team of Philipp Raickovic and Matt Banner, 8-2 at the number one spot. ALEXANDRE BUENO and PATRICK CLYNES followed that up with an 8-3 win over Jared Fellows and Michael Maciel at number two doubles. MAXIMO AGOGLIA and ADRIAN GARZA lost a close one to Brien Galon and Bob Resnik, 8-6 at the number three spot.
 
Ahead 2-1 after doubles, St. Edward's won the first set in four of the six singles matches. PATRICK CLYNES would take victory at the number one position after Raickovic was forced to retire early in the second set. Clynes had won the first easily, 6-2 and was ahead 1-0 in the second.
 
The Rattlers fought back, getting wins at the number three and five singles spots to tie the score, 3-3. Shortly after, Agoglia made it 4-3 Hilltoppers as he took down Banner in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, at the number four spot.
 
After winning the first set, 6-1, Garza fell behind 5-4 against Richard Foley at the number six position. The righty rallied for three-straight wins to take the second set, and the match.
 
"We are very excited to beat a very good St. Mary's team," head coach Russell Sterns said. "It was good to see some different players step up and win big matches. It shows the depth of this team. Adrian did a great job at crunch time."
 
St. Edward's will now wait and see where they land for the NCAA South Central Regional. The Hilltoppers were ranked third in the previous regional poll, but the final poll will come out this coming week. Check the Hilltopper Athletic Website for updates.
 
Sterns continued, "We are very excited to see what the postseason has in store for us. We are playing are best tennis when it counts the most."
