AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's University Women's Basketball fell to the Angelo State Rambelles on Saturday afternoon, 85-50 in the Recreation and Convocation Center.
Despite outscoring the Rambelles in the fourth quarter, the Hilltoppers could not overcome an 8-for-10 three-point effort by the opposition. With the loss, the Hilltoppers fall to 2-5 while ASU improves to 5-1.
A total of four Toppers scored eight points each as
SHAKERA BARNES,
KAYLA GOEBEL,
ABBY HOPPER, and
ESSENCE SAULS all helped lead the team in scoring.
KHIANI CLARK put together a gritty performance, grabbing a team-high seven rebounds and swiping away four steals. Barnes also led in assists with three.
"In the first quarter, when this game was still a contest, they made open shots and we didn't," said head coach J.J. Riehl. "However, we've been saying that all year. This group is starting to understand that they can't look around for someone else to help. This isn't what we drew up or how we scripted it, but it is what it is. We just have to continue to get better and grow as a team."
In the first quarter Barnes took the team on her back, scoring six of St. Edward's first eight points. However, Angelo State only missed three shots in the entire period and jumped out to a 24-12 lead at the break.
Single-digit scores for the home team in quarters two and three would increase the deficit to 39, but in the final period the Hilltopper made a resilient effort. A pair of baskets from Sauls and a three pointer from Goebel in the final 90 seconds moved the Toppers to 50 before the final buzzer.
Coach Riehl and her team will look to bounce back next Saturday, after finals week, as they host Texas A&M-Commerce in the Recreation and Convocation Center at 1 p.m. Fans who are unable to make it to the game can follow live stats and video online at GoHilltoppers.com.
