DALLAS, Texas - The St. Edward's women's tennis team pulled out a 6-3 victory over Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon at Kiest Park.

St. Edward's (4-1) got off to a great start as 24th-ranked BROOKE HUGHES and SASHA KHADZHYAN defeated Natalie Gennissen and Amanda Richter by a score of 8-2. The Hilltoppers would drop the No. 2 match as Cassandra Wessnerstrop and Liz Slaughter defeated IVANA ZECEVIC and FRANCESCA CHAHER by a score of 8-1. However, St. Edward's would secure a 2-1 lead over Dallas Baptist as RAFAELA HAEGELE and MARISSA WILLIAMS took down Maria Fernandez and Bianca Tijernia by a score of 8-3.

The Hilltoppers were able to carry their momentum into the singles portion of the competition. #49 Hughes was narrowly defeated at the No. 1 spot by #35 Natalie Gennissen in a very tight 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. The No. 2 matchup saw Khadzhyan take her combined overall record to 10-0 as she defeated Wennerstrop by a score of 7-5, 6-3. No. 4 IVANA ZECEVIC took down Liz Slaughter by a score of 6-1, 6-1 and FRANCESCA CHAHER defeated Amanda Richter at the No. 5 spot to secure the match for the Hilltoppers.

Haegele narrowly dropped the first set by a score of 7-5, but rebounded to win the second set 6-3. The two would go back-and-forth before Haegele made some very clutch winners to secure the third set 6-4.

Head Coach Kendall Brooks was ecstatic with the victory today, saying, "I'm really happy with the outcome today. Dallas Baptist came out strong and gave us a battle. It was a total team effort and I am excited to have started conference play 1-0."

The Hilltoppers will look to keep their four game winning streak alive as they face Tyler Junior College next Tuesday in Waco, Texas. Doubles action is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
