SAN ANGELO, Texas – St. Edward's softball team started off the weekend in winning fashion coming out on top against both Texas A&M-International, 4-3, and Colorado Mines, 5-4, on the opening day of the George McCorkle Challenge.
 
Texas A&M-International (0-3) was St. Edward's (2-2) first opponent of the day. The Dustdevils got on the board first as Mariena Gallardo singled to bring Krissy Sardelich home in the first inning. The Hilltoppers answered in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, MORGAN DUFOUR singled through the left side allowing LAURA ALVARADO to score. FAITH ROBERTS stepped up to the plate and homered to center field, advancing Dufour to home plate.
 
St. Edward's first baseman CAITIE CARNEY stretched the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning as she homered to centerfield. Texas A&M-International scored one run in the fifth inning as well, off an error which pushed Kayla Merriman on to the scoring plate. The score was now 4-2.
 
Dustdevil Krissy Sardelich would score again in the bottom of the seventh inning as Chelsea Capello doubled to left center, but St. Edward's pitcher KATELYN KLUG would hold Texas A&M-International's efforts there. She closed out the game with a strike out.
 
The Hilltoppers then set their sights on Colorado Mines (0-2). With bases loaded in the top of the first inning, Dufour fouled out to right field advancing two runners and bringing EMILY MAYFIELD home. St. Edward's found runs again in the bottom of the second. C. Ervin had an unearned score off an error. Mayfield scored again as KACI OLSON singled to the left to score  
 
With the score 4-0, Hilltopper pitcher SARAH DEBROW gave up four runs in the too of the seventh inning to tie the score, 4-4.
 
The Hilltoppers would answer in dramatic fashion as Roberts reached with two outs and came in to score the game-winner on an error by the Digger right fielder.
 
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday when they take on Colorado Mines once again at 10:30 a.m. They will also play host Angelo State with first pitch slated for 3:15 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on the RamBelle Athletic Website.
