Women's Tennis | 4/11/2015 11:52:00 PM

DALLAS, Texas – Coming off of its closest and most exciting win of the season Friday afternoon, the #36 St. Edward's Women's Tennis team kept its foot on the gas pedal to take down #46 Newman Saturday morning by a score of 7-2.

St. Edward's took two points from the doubles portion of the match. BROOKE HUGHES and Sasha Khadzyhan took care of business at No. 1 doubles with a decisive 8-2 win over Carissa Villaflor and Lisa Pleskan. RAFAELA HAEGELE and Marisa Williams took down Courtney Dold and Ariana Raga in the No. 3 singles match by a score of 8-2.  No. 2 doubles went to Newman as the team of Kate Bugayenko and Hillary Hicks defeated the duo of FRANCESCA CHAHER and IVANA ZECEVIC 8-4.

With a narrow 2-1 advantage, St. Edward's would take the top five singles matches to earn the 7-2 victory. Sasha Khadzyhan defeated Bugayenko handily by score of 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 1 position. RAFAELA HAEGELE earned her point at the No. 2 spot as she outlasted Pleskan in a three set match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Zecevic would wrap up her No. 3 match against Tamar Tskhakaia in straights sets 6-0, 6-3.

FRANCESCA CHAHER was pushed by Hicks at the No. 4 position, but Chaher ultimately took the match by scores of 6-2, 7-5. SUMMER BIGGS put forth a great effort against Dold at the No. 5 spot and it resulted in a 6-3, 6-1 victory for Biggs. Newman would take the No. 6 match as Villaflor narrowly defeated in Williams in a three set thriller 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.

Head Coach Kendall Brooks seemed thrilled of her team's performance for the weekend. "I was really proud of our performance today. Everyone was locked in and focused and although we lost one of the doubles, we came out and took care of business in singles. Energy and intensity was really high on every court and the girls did a great job of supporting each other." Brooks was quick to acknowledge that the team's biggest test was awaiting them in two weeks. "This was a big weekend for us to finish off conference play in second place. I am looking forward to see what we can do in the Heartland Conference Tournament in two weeks."
