WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The #36 St. Edward's Women's Tennis team could not get any momentum going against #14 Midwestern State Friday afternoon, as they were defeated, 9-0.
Â
At No. 1 doubles, Kayla Casey and Taylor proved to be a dynamic duo as they defeated
BROOKE HUGHES and Sasha Khadzyhan, 8-2.
FRANCESCA CHAHER and
IVANA ZECEVIC looked to earn the Hiltoppers a point at No. 2 doubles, but were defeated by Lauren Pineda and Lindsay Nochowicz, 8-5. Number three doubles saw a similar result for the Hilltoppers as
RAFAELA HAEGELE and
MARISSA WILLIAMS dropped their match to Madeline Schorlemmer and Paige Boykin by an 8-5 margin.
Â
The Hilltoppers could not find any traction in their efforts to get back into the match through the singles portion. No.1 singles saw #34 Kayla Casey defeat Khadzyhan in a very tight 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 decision. Haegele was forced to retire in her No. 2 match against Coffman after dropping the first set 6-2. Zecevic did what she could to earn a point in No. 3 singles, but her efforts were thwarted by Schorlemmer 6-2, 6-3.
Â
FRANCESCA CHAHER nearly took Anderson to the edge in both of their sets at No. 4, but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-1), 7-5.
SUMMER BIGGS could not gain any momentum at No. 5 singles and lost to Carrie Casey 6-2, 6-1. Williams would drop her match at No. 6: 6-1, 6-4 to Alexis Arrieta.
Â
Head Coach Kendall Brooks said of her team, "Tough day for us on the court. I thought we did a pretty good job of handling the wind mentally, but it definitely was challenging to play in. Midwestern State is a good team and they outplayed us today."
Â
St. Edward's will look to rebound quickly as they'll travel to Dallas and face Arkansas Fort Smith on Friday. First set of the Heartland Conference match is set for 2:00 p.m.
