KINGSVILLE, Texas – The St. Edward's Softball Team split a doubleheader with Texas A&M-Kingsville Wednesday afternoon. The Hilltoppers took the first game, 5-1, but fell in the nightcap, 3-2.
Game 1St. Edward's (22-15) got the best of Texas A&M-Kingsville (14-19) in the first game of their doubleheader. The Hilltoppers started off play in the third inning, scoring two runs against the Javelinas.
BREAH WHITTEN scored off of
CAITIE CARNEY's single down the left field line. Carney would then come home as well on a single by
FAITH ROBERTS.
The visitors kept the heat on as they entered the fourth inning. Whitten brought home two runners off a single to left field.
LAURA ALVARADO and
CYDNEY ERVIN scored. Whitten would get her second run on the day as Carney registered an RBI- a repeat of the first scoring play for the Hilltoppers. Whitten's fourth-inning run brought the tally to 5-0.
The Javelinas got on the board in the fifth inning as Jaeleen Castro scored. That is where the scoring ended as
SARAH DEBROW registered the win, bringing her record to 13-6. She tallied seven strikeouts and allowed just six hits.
Game 2In game two, the Javelinas battled back to avoid the sweep. St. Edward's struck first in the third inning. Ervin was the first Hilltopper to get on the board as she scored off a throwing error. Whitten was up next in the same inning, scoring off a single from Roberts marking her third run on the day.
Texas A&M-Kingsville held St. Edward's there, however. The Javelinas rallied in the fifth inning. Castro earned her second run on the day off a double from Haley Boyett. Rachael Longoria was up next, who recorded an RBI to send Boyett home. Her run evened the score, 2-2.
The Javelinas sealed their victory in the seventh inning as Valerie Ramirez scored Boyett with the walk-off run.
St. Edward's is back in action Thursday in a doubleheader against Rogers State. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. Live coverage will be available on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
