Box Score vs. ConcordiaBox Score vs. Dallas BaptistAUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's had been struggling to find its rhythm in 2016, but a Saturday doubleheader sweep of Concordia (Texas) and Dallas Baptist had the Hilltoppers dancing to same beat as a team, as it improved to 2-0 in Heartland Conference play.
St. Edward's (6-6) took on crosstown rival Concordia in a neutral-site matchup at the Austin Polo Club. The Hilltoppers wasted little time racing out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play.
Singles played no different, as St. Edward's won all six matchups in straight sets.
The afternoon session provided much of the same as St Edward's blasted Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist, 9-0 at the Strohmeyer Varsity Courts.
The bottom of the order for St. Edward's was dominant.
MATEUS DELLAVACHIA DE COL and
JARED FELLOWS were spotless, winning two matches on the day with 6-0, 6-0 scores. They also won their respective doubles matches to finish the day with four victories apiece.
Couple the sweep with Thursday's 8-1 win over Lewis (Ill.), and St. Edward's has gone 26-1 over its last three matches.
"As I look at what we have done so far, and how much we have struggled, it would be easy to get discouraged and question our goals," head coach Estevam Strecker said. "However, I remind myself that we have played a very difficult schedule. I think this week is a good reminder that we are a good team and we have a lot of firepower to be very competitive. We now have a very tough, important stretch of matches against ranked DII teams. I'm really looking forward to the next four weeks, and I know the guys are too!"
St. Edward's will be back in action Wednesday when they host Holy Names (Calif.). First-serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Strohmeyer Varsity Courts. Live stats will be available on GoHilltoppers.com
