KINGSVILLE, Texas – St. Edward's Baseball caught fire at the plate on Tuesday night, producing 14 runs on 16 hits as the Hilltoppers rolled past 16th-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville at Nolan Ryan Field.
J.D. ARROWOOD hit his 10
th home run of the year and finished the night 1-for-5 with a run and three RBI.
WESLEY HARRIS and
HUNTER COURSON also turned in impressive performances with three hits, two runs, and one RBI each.
JOSEPH OLSON,
DYLAN WATTS,
KEVIN MAYO, and
NATE TURNER all collected multiple hits as well, while Mayo and Turner joined Courson with a pair of runs apiece.
On the mound,
BRYCE DAVIS was given the start and credited his first win of the year. A total of six pitchers combined to hold the Javelinas to one run (unearned) on five hits with seven strikeouts.
The victory breaks St. Edward's out of a rare two-game skid and improves the team to 25-9 on the year. TAMU-Kingsville falls to 23-10.
"It was good to get our offense back in gear after last weekend," said head coach Rob Penders. "Our pitchers performed well again as we used a bunch of them in short, predetermined roles. An in-region win on the road is big, but it doesn't mean anything in the rankings until you play two games against an opponent. We will play Kingsville again in a couple of weeks at home, and that will be the game that matters."
The Hilltoppers scored early and often, starting right away in the first inning. Harris and Olson opened the game with back-to-back singles, and Arrowood sent Harris to third with a fly ball down the right-field line.
ROMEO CORTINA put a ball in play to bring Harris home, and give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, the Javelinas got their only run of the game following a fielding error, a walk, and an RBI-single up the middle.
With the score tied at one, the momentum turned in favor of St. Edward's and did not let up. The Hilltoppers scored four more in the third, thanks to Arrowood's three-run home run to center field. A trio of runs in the fourth made it 8-1, and two more in the fifth put St. Edward's into double digits. A total of four runs in the sixth capped off the scoring.
Coach Penders and his team return to Heartland Conference play on Friday as they travel to Arkansas to take on the Lions of Arkansas Fort Smith. The series will open with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. and wrap up on Saturday with a single, nine-inning game at 1 p.m. as well.
Live stats and video will be available on the Hilltopper Athletics Website.
