No. 18 MSOC’s Offense Comes Alive in 4-1 Win Over ENMU

THE RUNDOWN

AUSTIN, Texas – Despite giving up an early goal, the No. 18 St. Edward's University men's soccer team rallied for four goals and beat Eastern New Mexico Saturday 4-1 at Lewis-Chen Family Field in Heartland Conference play.

ENMU's (3-10-1, 2-8-0) Christopher Mesquita struck in the 19th minute to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Despite the Greyhounds playing five-back on defense, the Hilltoppers (11-2-1, 8-1-1) countered with four goals, including three in the second half.

ALEX KURI's first goal of the season knotted the score at one in the 29th minute before DYLAN ARMSTRONG's game-winner came in the 61st to break the tie. It was the second-straight match for Armstrong to record the game-winner for the Hilltoppers.

OWAIN HOSKINS added his second goal of the year in the 69th minute and PABLO COVARRUBIAS struck with time winding down in the 88th minute. Armstrong and Covarrubias each had an assist to go along with their goals.


HIGHLIGHTS
• The Hilltoppers remained unbeaten at home with their seventh win of the season at Lewis-Chen Family Field.
DYLAN ARMSTRONG knocked home his eighth goal of the season, the 25th of his career, and it was the eighth career game-winner for the junior forward, including the sixth in 2017.
• Armstrong's assist of OWAIN HOSKINS' goal tied him for fifth all-time on SEU's career assists list with 18.
NATE COONS' assist of Armstrong's goal was the ninth of his career, but the first since Nov. 15, 2015 vs. St. Mary's in the Heartland Conference Tournament.
• Covarrubias' goal was the 20th of his career and fourth of the season; his six shots Saturday were a career high.
• Hoskins' goal was the second of the season, the fifth of his career, and it came in his 50th career start for the Hilltoppers.
• Rangel's assist of Covarrubias' goal was the first if his career.
• SEU's four goals tied for the second-highest output of the season.

25 – SEU's offense was on the aggressive, posting a season-high 25 shots in the contest.

6 – Armstrong's sixth game-winner could tie him for the nation's lead in that category. Heading into this week's contests, six game winners took the national lead, but the leaders' stats will be updated Monday.

SEU Head Coach Brian Young on rebounding after a slow start vs. ENMU …
"I think our mentality wasn't very sharp right from the get go. I think that happened to us a while back, so it's been a while since we haven't started a game really strong. Eastern came down and scored the first goal and then our guys responded. But, I think against these next four teams that we are playing, we can't really start slow. So, we need to start a lot quicker and need to get better at defending and crossing and those kinds of things. So, we'll have a few days, hopefully the weather will cool down Monday and Tuesday, to get back to training for Midwestern."
