WACO, Texas – Wins in singles from VALENTINA MARTINEZ and MARISSA WILLIAMS were not enough Tuesday as St. Edward's women's tennis fell to top-ranked Tyler Junior College, 7-2.
 
Martinez's win came in straight sets against the 22nd-ranked singles player in the country. Williams also won in straight sets on line five.
 
St. Edward's (4-2) has faced three nationally ranked teams this season. Tyler Junior College (6-0) fields a roster that includes five nationally ranked singles players and two nationally ranked doubles teams.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• BETH HAYWARD and LAURA GALVAN nearly stole a point at No. 1 singles before falling 9-8 (5).
• After sweeping doubles, the Apaches won four straight singles matches to clinch the win.
• Williams put the Hilltoppers on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.
• Martinez capped the scoring with her 7-5, 7-5 win on line six.

 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• The Hilltoppers are 1-2 this season against nationally ranked opponents.
• St. Edward's is 3-6 in the all-time series against Tyler Junior College.
• Williams is 3-0 and Martinez is 4-1 in singles play this spring.
