DURANT, Okla. –
The St. Edward's softball team opened the 2017 season with two victories Friday during the first day of the Southeastern Regional Invitational. The Hilltoppers used late rallies to defeat Midwestern State (12-4) and Southern Nazarene (4-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1-Midwestern State)
- St. Edward's opened the scoring in the top of the first when freshman KAROLINA RODRIGUEZ hit an RBI-double and scored on an error by Midwestern State.
- The Mustangs got a run back in the second inning.
- The Hilltoppers responded with three runs to push their lead to 5-1. Senior BREAH WHITTEN, junior SAMI WILLIAMS and Rodriguez all picked up RBI during the inning.
- St. Edward's put the game away with seven runs in the final two innings, including three home runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2-Southrn Nazarene)
- Pitching ruled the game through the first three innings.
- Southern Nazarene opened the scoring in the fourth inning with an unearned run.
- St. Edward's fought back with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth. Rodriguez picked up the RBI with a fielder's choice.
- KAYLA APPLEBY and Williams put the Hilltoppers ahead in the sixth inning with an RBI-single and two-run double, respectively.
- Hilltopper pitching held the lead as St. Edward's advanced to 2-0 on the season.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- Senior ALEX MAYFIELD batted first and went 4-for-7 with two runs scored
- Williams led the team with four RBI during the two games.
- The 2-0 start is the first for St. Edward's since the 2011 season.
