AUSTIN, Texas. – Junior VANESSA CAMARA went 2-0 in singles Friday as St. Edward's women's tennis defeated Concordia 9-0 at UT-Whitaker Fields and Southwestern 6-3 at Austin Tennis Academy.
 
Camara's win against Southwestern tallied the Hilltoppers fifth team point and clinched the victory. PAOLA CARPIO, ELISA GUILLEN, and VALENTINA MARTINEZ also went 2-0 in singles play.
 
The Hilltoppers (2-0) opened the season ranked 37th in the country in the ITA Rankings. Concordia (0-1) and Southwestern (0-1) are both NCAA Division III in the American Southwest Conference and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Match One vs. Concordia

• The Hilltoppers swept doubles action while surrendering just four games to take a 3-0 lead.
• A quick 6-0, 6-0 win from MARISSA WILLIAMS in singles put SEU within a point of victory.
• Guillen clinched the affair with a 6-1, 6-0 win on line four.

 
Match Two vs. Southwestern

• St. Edward's just missed a doubles sweep as the Hilltoppers took a 2-1 lead into singles action.
• Southwestern drew first blood in singles with a win at No. 2.
• Martinez responded with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 followed by Carpio on line three.
• Camara closed it out with a 6-1, 7-5 victory.

 
 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• Camara's 2-0 start in singles is the first of her career.
• Friday marked the Hilltoppers first match against Concordia in program history.
• St. Edward's has never lost to Southwestern.
• The Hilltoppers last 2-0 start to the season came in 2001 under St. Edward's Hall-of-Fame Coach, Russell Sterns.

St. Edward's continues its opening weekend Saturday with matches at Trinity and at Incarnate Word in San Antonio. First serve against UIW is set for 1 p.m.
