PLANO, Texas – The St. Edward's women's tennis team came up short in regional action Friday with a 5-4 loss to Metro State.
 
BETH HAYWARD continued her brilliant play in singles winning her sixth straight match. MARISSA WILLIAMS improved to 9-1 in singles play this spring.
 
St. Edward's (7-8) has lost five straight matches entering Saturday's Heartland Conference opener against Dallas Baptist.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Metro State took a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
• The two squads split matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles before the Roadrunners scratched out a 9-8 tiebreaker win at No. 3 doubles.
• Metro State started singles play with a win at No. 1.
• Hayward's 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 pulled the Hilltoppers back to within one (3-2).
• Victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles clinched the match for the Roadrunners.
• VALENTINA MARTINEZ ended her day 2-0 with a win at No. 6 singles to go along with her doubles victory.
• Williams made the final tally with a third-set tiebreaker victory at No. 5 singles.

 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• The bottom of the lineup has been outstanding for the Hilltoppers in 2017, combining for a 31-8 record at No. 4 through No. 6 singles.
• With their singles victories, both Martinez and Williams take over the team lead with nine wins.
• St. Edward's falls to 0-2 in the all-time series against Metro State.

St. Edward's is back in action Saturday at 10 a.m. against Dallas Baptist. There will be no live coverage of the match.
