LUBBOCK, Texas – The St. Edward's softball team combined for 15 runs and 19 hits Friday in a doubleheader split (12-3, 3-4) against Lubbock Christian.
 
St. Edward's (13-22, 6-2 Heartland) drops one game behind conference leader St. Mary's. Lubbock Christian (22-12, 4-4 Heartland) moves up to fourth place in the conference standings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1: St. Edward's 12, Lubbock Christian 3)
W-Slatten (6-7), L-Holmes (4-2)

• St. Edward's opened the scoring in the first inning when senior ALEX MAYFIELD led off with a single and scored on an RBI-double by sophomore KAYLA APPLEBY.
• Lubbock Christian tied the score with a run in the second inning.
• The Hilltoppers answered with two runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
• Junior SAMI WILLIAMS tallied the big hit with a double down the right-field line to score one run, and the second run scored on a Lady Chap error.
• In the top of the seventh inning, St. Edward's opened the floodgates, scoring nine runs to put the game away.
• The Hilltoppers tallied seven hits and Lubbock Christian committed three errors as SEU sent 14 batters to the plate in the final frame.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2: Lubbock Christian 4, St. Edward's 3)
W-Eltsosie (11-4), L-Rex (3-10)

• The Lady Chaps started the scoring in the second inning with two unearned runs.
• In the fifth inning, the first three batters reached base for St. Edward's.
• Sophomore MEGAN HOFFMAN brought in the first run with a hit by pitch.
• Williams tied the game with a fielder's choice to shortstop.
• The Hilltoppers took the lead in the sixth inning when freshman ASHLEY NASSY laced a one-out triple to right field.
• Nassy came in to score on a ground ball from Mayfield.
• Lubbock Christian rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring a run off a RBI-single and the winning run on a wild pitch.

 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• Senior LAUREN SLATTEN picked up the victory in game one, allowing three runs on seven hits, while striking out eight batters in 7.0 innings of work.
• Slatten has won four of her last five decisions in the circle.
• Mayfield finished the day 5-for-8 with three runs scored and three RBI.
• Both Hoffman and Williams drove in three runs.
• Lubbock Christian leads the all-time series, 7-4, but St. Edward's has won three of the last five meetings.

"I am very happy with the way our players swung the bat tonight. It worked out well for us in the first game. Although we didn't score as many runs in the second game, I felt like every at-bat was solid. Both Lauren (Slatten) and Ashlee (Rex) threw good games, and while the overall defense was solid, a few things still need to be cleaned up. Tomorrow, we need to stay locked in and continue to compete."
