AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Morgan Hoffman stole home in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday as St. Edward's softball came away with a 3-2, game-one victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Hilltoppers dropped game two to the Javelinas, 1-0.
 
St. Edward's (7-13) split the doubleheader in its first home games of the season. The Hilltoppers have played their first 18 games on the road.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1: St. Edward's 3, TAMU-Kingsville 2)

• TAMU-Kingsville struck first in the fourth inning when Roxy Chapa singled home the first run of the game.
• St. Edward's wasted little time responding with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
• Sophomore JINNY STRICKLIN scored on a wild pitch and senior BREAH WHITTEN drove in the second run with a fielder's choice.
• The Javelinas did not give up, scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning.
• In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hoffman was hit by a pitch, and advanced to third on consecutive wild pitches.
• After reaching third base, Hoffman stole home when she noticed nobody was covering the plate.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2: TAMU-Kingsville 1, St. Edward's 0)

• TAMU-Kingsville got the only run of the game on a solo home run by Victoria Schoonard-Saborio in the top of the first inning.
• The best chance for the home team came in the sixth inning when St. Edward's loaded the bases with one out.
• Javelina starting pitcher Breanna Smith got out of jam by retiring the next two batters.

 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• Hoffman, SHELBY JANDA, and SAMI WILLIAMS all finished the day with two hits each.
• Senior ASHLEE REX (2-5) picked up the victory in game one, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out a season-high seven batters.
• The victory in game one snapped an eight-game losing streak for St. Edward's.
• Texas A&M-Kingsville leads the all-time series, 42-35.
