ARLINGTON, Texas – MARISSA WILLIAMS' victory at No. 5 singles Friday clinched St. Edward's women's tennis' 6-3 win over Heartland Conference foe UA Fort Smith.
 
Williams is now 11-2 in singles action this spring. VALENTINA MARTINEZ and BETH HAYWARD also have 11 singles wins, sitting at 11-4 on the season.
 
St. Edward's (10-9, 2-0 Heartland) is tied with St. Mary's for first place in the conference standings.  UA Fort Smith (3-11, 1-2 Heartland) sits fourth in the league, in possession of the final berth in the Heartland Conference tournament.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• UA Fort Smith jumped out to an early lead with a pair of wins in doubles.
• Martinez and PAOLA CARPIO made it 3-2, St. Edward's, with back-to-back wins in singles.
• The Lady Lions tied the match at 3-3 with a win on line one.
• Hayward and Williams pushed the Hilltoppers to victory with wins at No. 3 and No. 6.

 
HILLTOPPER NOTES

• St. Edward's is 7-1 in the all-time series with UA Fort Smith.
• Martinez is now 32-15 in singles action over her two years on the hilltop.
• As a team, the Hilltoppers have 96 singles wins this season.

"After a sluggish start, I felt like we were able to turn it up a notch in singles. We had a few close first sets, but stayed composed, and were able to roll the rest of the way. A few of our girls played very confident, focused tennis, which is great. UA Fort Smith came ready to compete, and we have to get a better start tomorrow against Newman, because I anticipate they will come out firing as well."
