ARLINGTON, Texas – A total of four Hilltoppers won in doubles and singles Saturday to help St. Edward's women's tennis hold onto a tie for first place in the Heartland Conference with an 8-1 win over Newman.

LAURA GALVAN,
BETH HAYWARD,
MARISSA WILLIAMS and
VALENTINA MARTINEZ all went 2-0 on the day with wins in singles and doubles. Williams, Martinez and Hayward are all tied for the team lead with 12 singles victories this spring.

St. Edward's (11-9, 3-0 Heartland) remains tied with St. Mary's for first place in the conference standings. Newman (4-15, 0-4 Heartland) has been eliminated from contention for a berth in the conference tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hilltoppers jumped ahead 3-0 by winning all three doubles matches, 8-3, 8-6, 8-3.
- Williams made quick work of her opponent on line four in singles, 6-2, 6-2.
- Martinez clinched the win with an equally dominant performance at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

- St. Edward's is 8-1 in the all-time series with Newman.
- PAOLA CARPIO and Hayward have both won three straight matches in singles.
- The Hilltoppers are 7-2 in regional matches.
