THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas –
The St. Edward's baseball team offense got hot in game two to propel them over Newman 13-7 and even the Heartland Conference opening series on Friday after a late surge in game one gave the Jets a 5-3 win at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

In the doubleheader, ROBBIE LAMMONS paced the team in hits (4-for-7) and recorded an RBI, while RYAN MCPHAIL batted 3-for-8 with two RBIs thanks to his two-run shot in game two - his second of the season. WILLIAM HAIRSTON led the way with four RBIs, totaling them all in game two for a new single-game record, and ZACH SCHINDLER also shined with three RBIs in the same game. Both had two hits on the day.

Jets' (9-15) Channing Williams drove in the first run of the day in the first inning, but the Hilltoppers (13-10) answered in the second with back-to-back RBI singles from DYLAN MAY and TROY ANDERSON to take a 2-1 lead. Newman would regain the lead in the top of the fifth thanks to a RBI single off the bat of Brian Canfield and a sacrifice fly from Daniel Jahnke that drove in the go-ahead run, 3-2. NU's pitcher Zack Erdman continued to deal, retiring eight consecutive batters from innings four through six, and Clay Druin hit a 2-run bomb in the seventh to extend the Jet's lead, 5-2. SEU was able to push one run through in the home half, but fell in the conference opener, 5-3.

JUAN CORTINA (2-4) tallied nine strikeouts for the fourth time this season in 6.1 innings and GARRETT MILLER came in relief for 0.2 innings and threw one strikeout in the loss. NU's Erdman (3-3) picked up the win, throwing a complete game with two strikeouts and one walk.

The Hilltoppers offense came out on fire in game two as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead highlighted by Schindler's second homer of the season, a two-run long-ball to cap off a five-run fourth inning. The Jets stormed back with two consecutive three-run innings to pull within two runs through at the end of the sixth stanza. SEU then exploded for five more runs in the seventh, starting with a three RBI triple from Hairston, followed by another two-run dinger , this time from McPahil. SEU would remain on cruise control from there and win game two 13-7.

BLAKE HOLUB got the start on the bump and threw four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. AUSTIN WEAVER (2-0) was the first out the bullpen and claimed the win after recording one out and CHRIS LOGAN earned his first career save after throwing a new single-game career high of five punch-outs.
