THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's baseball team split its Heartland Conference series opener vs. Newman after taking game one 2-1 behind a complete game from
TANNER LAWSON, but dropped game two 11-5 at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers are now 40-16 vs. the Jets in the all-time series.
Â
WILLIAM HAIRSTON (.429) batted 3-for-7, scored two runs and had three stolen bases on the day, and
ROBBIE LAMMONS (.375) hit 3-for-8 at the dish with one run. Both of
DYLAN MAY's (.400) hits totaled extra bases, including his first career home run that drove in a couple of runs. He finished the evening with a team-high three RBIs and logged his first stolen base of his career in game one.
Â
The Hilltoppers (14-11, 2-2) did most of their damage offensively in the early stages of game one with runs in the second and third inning.
TJ GISELBACH opened the second with a single and touched home plate on a ground double play, and in the ensuing home half, Hairston scored an unearned run thanks to a fielding error by the shortstop to account for the club's final run. Lawson (4-2) tossed a one-hit shutout through six innings, but an active seventh that opened with a leadoff single saw one Newman (10-16, 2-2) run cross home plate. Nevertheless, Lawson got the win in his fifth complete game of the year where he fanned five batters and walked three.
Â
The Jets set the tone early in game two as they piled on eight runs in the first two innings for a commanding 8-0 lead. Although the Hilltoppers were able to pull within five runs by the sixth inning, the hole was too deep for the home team as they eventually fell, 11-5.
EVAN TUBBS (1-2) was charged the loss after pitching one inning with one strikeout.
JAKE DAVIS provided the biggest relief for SEU, tossing 5.1 innings and logged a new single-game career-high of five strikeouts.
COOPER BAILEY,
GARRETT MILLER, and
JOSIAH CHUPIK all came out of the bullpen and combined for 2.2 innings pitched, each recording one strikeout.

THEY SAID IT
Head Coach Rob Penders overall thoughts on today's split vs. Newman …
"It's the same stuff, nothing changes. I mean it's always the little things that get you and we are just not doing those consistently and that's why we can't be consistent in our efforts. When you're like that, it's frustrating for everybody – for them, for us, and probably to watch as well. But, it's a thing where we have to realize that the little things are going to make the difference here. We really have to buy into those and moving forward that's the thing we have to really concentrate on."
