THE RUNDOWN
AUSTIN, Texas – BLAKE HOLUB hit his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the sixth to kickoff a three-run inning that led the St. Edward's baseball team (16-15, 4-6) to a 4-1 victory over Rogers State (18-14, 4-6) in game one. The Hillcats responded however, with a 10-6 win in game two as the teams split Friday's doubleheader at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
Â
TJ GISELBACH had a day at the plate hitting 5-for-7 with three hits registering as doubles. He also scored four runs and drove in one. Meanwhile, Holub continues to trouble pitchers as he batted .500 on the day (4-for-8) and has totaled six extra base hits over four games, including his first bomb of the season Friday.Â
Â
The pitchers seized control of game one as both clubs were locked into a scoreless affair until Rogers State's Garrett Hall broke the ice in the fifth inning with an RBI double. The Hilltoppers clapped back by tying the game with an RBI single from
WILLIAM HAIRSTON in the bottom half before busting the game open with three runs courtesy of two long-balls in the sixth from Holub and
ZACH SCHINDLER.
JAKE DAVIS (3-1) topped off the game in the seventh, striking out two to claim the win.
JUAN CORTINA got the start and tossed 5.1 innings with nine punch-outs. RSU's Time Luce (3-5) recorded the loss after throwing 5.1 innings and tallying six strikeouts.
Â
The Hilltopper offense kept things rolling with back-to-back RBI doubles from Giselbach and
ROBBIE LAMMONS, respectively, giving the home team a 2-0 lead in the first frame. However, RSU settled in defensively and held SEU scoreless for five consecutive innings while piling on ten unanswered runs including a plentiful seven-run, five-hit seventh inning. St. Edward's put a small rally together with two runs in the seventh and ninth stanzas but ultimately fell, 10-6.
Â
Holub (2-3) was tagged with the loss after 3.1 innings of work and three strikeouts but walked six.
CHRIS LOGAN tossed 3.0 innings with three Ks,
JOSIAH CHUPIK threw 2.1 innings with two strikeouts, and
GARRETT MILLER recorded one out in game two. Spencer Bivens (6-2) walked away with the win, earning just one run and struck out three in 6.2 innings.
