Hilltoppers outlast Newman to clinch series

Box Score

WICHITA – St. Edward's scored three runs in the 10th inning to outlast Newman, 7-4, and clinch the Heartland Conference series on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Field.

The Jets (16-28, 2-16 HC) forced the game into an extra frame after scoring two runs in the ninth.

The Hilltoppers (21-25, 8-10 HC) started the final frame with back-to-back groundouts. However, ZACH SCHINDLER started the two-out rally with a single. The 'Toppers then loaded the bases before AARON SIGAL drew a walk to force Schindler across with the go-ahead run.

RYAN MCPHAIL was hit by a pitch to push across another run and DYLAN MACKIN tallied a run-scoring hit to give SEU a three-run lead.

KOEHLER VANDAMENT came out of the bullpen to close out the game, working around a two-out single to pick up his third save of the season.

St. Edward's moved within one game of a potential playoff spot with one final three-game series remaining. The Hilltoppers, who trail St. Mary's and Oklahoma Christian for the final spot, will play Angelo State in a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 30. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

St. Edward's will wrap up conference play next weekend at Texas A&M International.
