SAN ANGELO, Texas - The St. Edward's baseball team defeated #5 seed UT Tyler 19-3 to stay alive in the LSC Championship Finals behind a powerful offensive performance and an outstanding pitching performance. 

 

The Hilltoppers wasted no time, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 4-0 lead against the Patriots. A bases-loaded walk, an RBI fielder's choice, and a two-run single by Davis Drewek helped the Hilltoppers take the early lead.

 

After the Patriots scored in the top of the third, the Hilltoppers answered back with a four-run inning. Cullen Ainsworth got the scoring started with an RBI double to left field. Following a walk, Davis Drewek came up to the plate and smashed a three-run blast over the left-field wall to take an 8-1 lead.

 

In the fourth, SEU drove in three runs to extend their lead to nine. Jake Hahn drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and Stacey Bailey crushed a two-run homer over the left-field wall to bring the score to 11-2.

 

In the fifth, RBI singles by Turner Olson and Jake Hahn extended the Hilltoppers lead to 13-2.

 

A wild pitch allowed Morgan Allen to score in the seventh, bringing the score to 14-3. 

 

In the eighth, the Hilltoppers kept pouring it on as they drove in five runs to extend their lead to 19-3. RBI singles by Hunter Conner and Michael Martinez, a two-run triple by Turner Olson, and an RBI fielder's choice helped the Hilltoppers pull away.

 

Wesley Gafford showed why he was named LSC pitcher of the year as he pitched a complete game allowing just two earned runs on only five hits while striking out seven batters in the win. 

 

The Hilltoppers are back in action tonight to face the loser of this afternoon's Angelo State/West Texas A&M matchup at Foster Field. First pitch is set for 7 pm.
