LUBBOCK, Texas - The St. Edward's offense once again propelled them to victory, defeating Lubbock Christian 9-7 in game one of their best-of-three series.

 

Cullen Ainsworth got things started with a three-run blast over the left-center wall in the top of the first. Later in the inning, an error allowed the Chaps to score to make it a 3-1 game.

 

A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second brought the score to 3-2.

 

In the third, Cullen Ainsworth hit his second three-run home run of the game, this one flying over the left-field wall to extend the Hilltoppers lead to 6-2.

 

In the fourth, the Hilltoppers drove in three runs to take their largest lead of the night. A wild pitch allowed the first run of the inning to score. Turner Olson doubled to right-center field to drive in a run, and Stacey Bailey capped the inning off with an RBI single up the middle, bringing the score to 9-3.

 

In the seventh and eighth innings, the Chaps tried to mount a comeback as they put up four runs to pull within two, but they would fall short as the Hilltoppers took a 1-0 series lead.  

 

In the win, Wesley Gafford pitched six innings, giving up four runs on six hits. Jayson Flores got the game's final six outs as he allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out three batters. 

 

Game two of this best-of-three series takes place Saturday. First pitch is set for 3 pm.
