AUSTIN, Texas – A goal in the 18
th minute by Danielle Pressley gave #9 Dallas Baptist a 1-0 victory over #5 St. Edward's Saturday afternoon in a matchup of two heavyweights for the 2012 Heartland Conference Tournament Championship.
It was a defensive struggle on both sides as neither team was able to mount a lot of chances.
Dallas Baptist (18-2) had the first shot of the game in the 10
th minute as Jakes Cox's chance went wide left. After entering the game in the 17
th minute, the Patriots' Jolee Patterson passed a ball to Pressley just a minute later that the forward ripped a shot from 25 yards out. Hilltopper keeper
DANIELLE LICARIONE was a few too many steps off of her line and the shot by Pressely sailed over her and into the goal. Pressley would take another shot in the 21
st minute but it was blocked by the St. Edward's defense.
St. Edward's (18-2) finally got its offense going in the 35
th minute when
JESSICA TRAVES got free on a cross off of a cornerkick and headed the ball towards the goal. Patriot keeper Kerry Edwards was there for the save as she punched the ball over the back of the net. The resulting cornerkick did not amount to anything, as both teams would go into the break with Dallas Baptist ahead, 1-0.
In the second half, it was the Hilltoppers pressing offensively, looking for the equalizer. They would take five shots compared to one for Dallas Baptist in the final half. In the 75
th minute, newly inserted forward
AMBER BLACK had a brilliant chance from about 15 yards out that was past the DBU keeper but just went over the goal.
RACHEL MURRAY looked to have the game-tying goal in the 85
th minute, as she got behind the DBU keeper but her shot went just to right of the goal.
After splitting the two matchups during the regular season, it was the Patriots who would claim the 2012 tournament crown. St. Edward's had defeated Dallas Baptist for the crown in Dallas for last season's tournament championship.
The Hilltoppers outshot the Patriots, 6-4, and had a 4-2 advantage in cornerkicks but could not find the back of the net.
The two teams were first and second in the region heading into the tournament and both could still have a shot at hosting a regional site. The NCAA Selection Show will be Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. CST on
www.ncaa.com as the Hilltoppers see their fate.
