AUSTIN, Texas –
JEFF CAMPBELL hit five three pointers en route to a game-high 17 points to lead St. Edward's to an 89-70 victory over Panhandle State Saturday afternoon. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak and pushed the Hilltoppers closer to that fourth and final playoff spot in the Heartland Conference.
St. Edward's (13-10, 2-5 HC) opened the game with seven-straight points. After jumpers by
CHRIS WACKER and
JAMES STUKES,
CONNER KJER added a three pointer to give the Hilltoppers a quick 7-0 lead with 17:31 left in the first half.
Panhandle State (4-15, 0-7 HC) fought back by scoring eight-unanswered points over the next two minutes to take an 8-7 lead, with 15:19 remaining. Bill Lee had a three-point play and then Carlos Tapia-Ponce nailed three-straight free throws.
Over the next four minutes the lead would change hands four times and T.J. Farrell's bucket at the 11-minute mark gave the Aggies a 14-13 advantage.
JOSEPH SALDANA, who just checked into the game for the Hilltoppers, sparked a run of seven-straight points with a trey and a fast-break layup to give St. Edward's a 20-14 lead.
The Hilltopper lead would swell to as many as eight points in the first half, but the Aggies got within four at the break, 36-32.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers were unconscious from downtown. In the first six minutes of play, St. Edward's nailed six shots from behind the arc to spark a 24-3 run. Campbell had four of the treys and the spurt gave the Hilltoppers a commanding 60-35 lead with 13:19 on the clock. A three-pointer by
ZAC GRAHAM raised the lead to its highest at 32 points with 9:29 remaining and St. Edward's never looked back.
After going 3-for-16 from the three-point line in the first half, St. Edward's responded with a 9-of-19 clip in the second.
Campbell was 6-of-10 from the field and 5-for-8 from behind the arc for his 17 points. Four other Hilltoppers scored in double figures with Wacker and
SHIMEEK JOHNSON finishing with double-doubles. Wacker posted 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Johnson tallied 10 points and 11 boards. Kjer scored 13 points, while
HARLEY NUSSMAN chipped in with 10 points and two blocks.
St. Edward's will not be back in action until Saturday when they travel to take on Heartland Conference newcomer McMurry. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. at Kimbrell Arena in Abilene, Texas. Live Video and Stats will be available on the War Hawk Athletic Website.
