Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – The #3 St. Edward's baseball team pounded out six runs in the seventh inning of game two to spark the Hilltoppers to a 6-4 victory and a doubleheader sweep of Ouachita Baptist Sunday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. After losing two heartbreaking games on Saturday to the Tigers, St. Edward's got two brilliant pitching performances and fought off late rallies in both games to win 4-2, and 6-4.
"It was nice to rebound today and get two wins against a resilient Ouachita Baptist team," Hilltopper head coach
Rob Penders said. "We got three outstanding performances from our starting pitchers this weekend. Unfortunately for us, that only resulted in two wins. However, if we get those type of quality starts all year, we will win more weekends than we lose."
In game one, St. Edward's (2-2) wasted little time getting on the board.
MILES WRIGHT led off the inning with an infield single. After a sacrifice bunt moved Wright to second and a walk to
JOHN ALEXANDER,
WES KOENIG stepped to the plate and laced a double down the right field line to score Wright.
The Hilltoppers added to the lead in the third inning, getting RBI-singles from
RANSOM LALONDE and
KEVIN MAYO. Cutter Runter drew a walk with the bases loaded to make the score, 4-0.
Hilltopper starting pitcher
COLLIN SHERROD picked up where he left off from the 2013 season. The southpaw allowed just two hits through the first six innings and no real scoring threat by the opposition.
Ouachita Baptist would scratch across two runs (one unearned) in its final at-bat, but Sherrod finished them off for the complete-game victory. He would end by allowing four hits, while walking one and striking out six batters.
In the second game, both starting pitchers had things rolling. Ouachita Baptist starter Craig Daniell and
BOBBY SCOTT for the Hilltoppers each held the other team in check for the first six and half innings.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Hilltoppers broke through. With the bases loaded, LaLonde drove in a run on a fielder's choice for the first run of the game.
JAY SHNIDERSON followed with a RBI-single, and Wright and
DYLAN WATTS each tallied two-RBI singles to push the lead to 6-0.
Two errors by St. Edward's in the eighth inning helped the Tigers to four runs before the Hilltoppers cut off the rally.
DAN BECKS came in to the game in the ninth and shut the door.
Scott (1-0) picked up the victory in game two, allowing just three hits, while walking two and striking out six in 7.0 innings of work for the victory.
"Overall, it was good to open up the season versus a quality opponent who exposed some of our weaknesses and tested our strengths as a team," Penders said.
Koenig led the Hilltoppers at the plate for the weekend, pounding out an .467 (7-15) batting average with three doubles, three runs and three RBI.
St. Edward's will be back in action Saturday when they travel to take part in the Dallas Christian Tournament. The Hilltoppers will face Mid-America Christian at 12:30 p.m., and Dallas Christian at 3 p.m.
