Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's dropped both games of a doubleheader to Lubbock Christian Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Chaparrals took game one, 4-3, and completed the sweep with a 3-1 win in the second game.
In game one, Lubbock Christian (16-7, 10-1 HC) used the long ball to race out to a 3-0 lead in the first three and half innings. Joel Lutz put the Chaparrals on the board in the second inning when he tallied a home run to left field. Wigberto Nevarez also had a home run, but his was a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
St. Edward's (16-8, 4-4 HC) would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth as
KEVIN MAYO drove in in
GABLE WHITACRE to make the score, 3-1.
After the Chaparrals tallied an unearned run in the fifth inning, the Hilltoppers mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh.
KEVIN MAYO led off with a single. After a groundout,
CUTTER RUNTE ripped a triple to right center to plate Mayo. Runte would come in to score on a groundout but that is where the rally would end.
BRANNON EASTERLING (3-4) picked up the loss for St. Edwards, tossing 7.0 innings of work and allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits, while walking two and striking out six.
In game two, Hilltopper starting pitcher
COLLIN SHERROD was dealing. Through seven innings of work, the lefty only allowed one unearned run on three hits, while walking two and striking out a career-high 12 batters.
St. Edward's matched Lubbock Christian's run with a run of its own in the sixth inning.
WES KOENIG provided the fireworks with a lead off home run.
Lubbock Christian started the eighth inning by loading the bases with no outs. St. Edward's would limit the damage and only allowed two runs.
The Hilltoppers put runners on in the eighth and ninth but failed to bring any home as they dropped the second game of the doubleheader.
